Fate Points

Fate Points in Fate Accelerated are a versatile resource, similar to action points in Dungeons & Dragons but with broader applications. While D&D action points allow for extra actions or rolls, Fate Points influence both narrative and mechanics, enabling players to shape the story, gain advantages, and emphasize their character’s strengths.

Earning Fate Points

1. Accepting Compels: Players earn Fate Points by agreeing to narrative complications introduced by the GM through their aspects. This mechanic encourages characters to face challenges tied to their traits and backstories, enriching the narrative.

2. Using Rare Items (Questies Only):

  • Standard Replenishment Items: Restore Fate Points up to the character’s Refresh level, which is the baseline amount regained after a long rest.
  • Over-Refresh Replenishment Items: These rarer items allow players to gain Fate Points beyond their Refresh, providing extra resources for critical moments.

3. Quest Rewards (Questies Only): Completing quests or overcoming significant obstacles can reward Fate Points, much like D&D awards treasure or XP for milestones. This ties character progression to narrative achievements.

Refresh vs. Earning Fate Points

The Refresh level serves as a baseline for how many Fate Points a character regains after a long rest but doesn’t limit their maximum Fate Points. Players can exceed their Refresh level by earning additional points through items, rewards, or compels. Refresh simply ensures that characters start each day with at least their Refresh amount:

  • If a character has fewer Fate Points than their Refresh, they regain points to match it.
  • If they have more Fate Points than their Refresh, they retain all their points.

For example:

  • A character with a Refresh of 3 and 5 Fate Points keeps all 5 after a refresh.
  • A character with a Refresh of 3 and 1 Fate Point gains 2 more to reach 3.

Using Fate Points

Fate Points are primarily used to:

  • Invoke Aspects: Gain a +2 bonus to a roll, reroll the dice, or shape the narrative in a way aligned with an aspect.
  • Create Opportunities: Introduce story elements or overcome obstacles in creative, aspect-driven ways.

Comparing Fate Points to D&D Action Points

While D&D action points often grant mechanical benefits like extra actions or rerolls, Fate Points go further by enabling narrative control. They let players actively shape the story, not just react to it, blending gameplay mechanics with creative storytelling.
