====== Aspects ====== ==== About ==== Aspects in [[start|Fate Accelerated]] are the heart of character design and storytelling. They define what makes each character unique and provide opportunities for both advantages and challenges. The most fun aspects are double-edged, offering boosts when they work in your favor but also creating complications when they don’t. This balance keeps the story dynamic and engaging, encouraging [[Players]] to embrace the ups and downs of their characters’ journeys. Players and NPCs typically have three core aspects: * **High Concept:** A quick summary of who your character is and what they do, like "Fearless Defender of the Weak" or "Clever Trickster with a Heart of Gold." * **Relationship:** Tied to their connection with another character or group, such as "Trusted Ally of the Guild" or "Sworn Enemy of the Shadow Cult." * **Trouble:** A personal flaw or recurring challenge, like "Hotheaded Adventurer" or "Haunted by a Dark Past." These core aspects provide opportunities for boosts and complications. For example, a Trouble aspect might lead to a disadvantage in one scene but open up a chance for creative problem-solving or narrative growth in another. The double-edged nature of aspects ensures the story stays unpredictable and exciting. In addition to the core aspects, bonus aspects in **Questies** can come from rare equipment, specifically weapons and shields. These aspects represent unique traits tied to the item, such as a sword with "Unbreakable Edge" or a shield with "Blessed by the Sun God." ==== Invoking Aspects ==== Invoking aspects is how you bring their power into play during the game, making your character’s traits and the story’s details actively influence the outcome of actions. In Questies, there are several ways to invoke aspects to gain an edge or turn the tide of a situation: 1. **Invoking Your Own Aspects** By spending a Fate Point, you can invoke one of your aspects (such as your High Concept, Relationship, or Trouble) to gain an advantage. This might give you a +2 bonus to a roll, allow you to reroll your dice, or simply create a narrative justification for success. For example, invoking "Fearless Defender of the Weak" might give you the courage and strength to hold off a powerful enemy while allies retreat. 2. **Bonus Invokes from Created Advantages** You can also gain bonus invokes without spending a Fate Point by using the Create an Advantage action. This allows you to create a new aspect or leverage an existing one with a free invoke. For example, if you’re in a slippery environment, you could use Create an Advantage to establish the aspect "Slick Floor," gaining a free invoke to trip an enemy. These free invokes make aspects even more tactical and rewarding to use. 3. **Invoking Enemy or Scene Aspects** You’re not limited to your own aspects—enemy and scene aspects can also be invoked. If an opponent has an aspect like "Reckless Brute," you could invoke it to outmaneuver them or exploit their carelessness. Similarly, scene aspects like "Burning Building" or "Crowded Marketplace" can be used to your advantage. For instance, you might invoke "Burning Building" to trap an enemy or "Crowded Marketplace" to disappear into the crowd. Invoking aspects in Fate Accelerated is about blending mechanics with the narrative. Whether you’re drawing strength from your own traits, setting up advantages, or exploiting the environment and your opponents, each invoke adds layers to the story and keeps gameplay exciting.
